Emergency electrical dispatch

What affects consumer unit replacement cost?

A board-only price does not describe the whole job. A firm replacement quote needs the circuit requirements, existing wiring condition, access and testing scope to be assessed.

If there is smoke, fire, electric shock risk, exposed live wiring or water near electrics, move away from the hazard and call emergency services first.

Why there is no single replacement price

Two properties with the same number of bedrooms can have different circuit arrangements and wiring conditions. The number of circuits, suitable board specification, condition of existing wiring, working access, testing and any remedial work all affect the quote. We do not publish an unverified package price or copy competitors' rates.

Photos of the closed board and circuit labels can help with the initial enquiry if they can be taken safely. They do not replace an inspection or establish the condition of concealed wiring. Our call-out is £50 plus VAT (£60 total), with the remaining work quoted before starting. Quotes that need no visit are free.

An itemised quote should explain the scope

This is a scope example, not a priced offer. Ask which items apply to your property:

Assessment and circuit checks
Existing installation checks and the information used to specify the work.
Consumer unit and protective devices
The agreed board specification and circuit provision.
Replacement labour and access
Removal, installation, agreed shutdown and any access arrangements.
Testing and documentation
The testing, handover records and applicable certification or notification arrangements.
Remedial repairs
Clearly identified existing defects, with separate approval for additional work.
Exclusions and follow-up
Any decoration, building work or return attendance not included.

Arrange an assessment before a planned replacement

Tell us the property type, postcode, known circuit problems and suitable appointment times. Mention medical equipment, refrigeration, alarms or working-from-home needs so the shutdown can be discussed. Inspection comes before a firm quote where the existing condition is uncertain.

See the replacement service and handover process. If the board is tripping now, start with consumer-unit fault help rather than assuming replacement is needed. An EICR has a different inspection purpose and must be agreed separately.

Request a consumer-unit assessment. Technical background is available in Electrical Safety First's consumer-unit replacement guidance.

Your questions answered

Can a photo give a firm consumer-unit replacement price?

A safe photo can help explain the enquiry, but it cannot establish the condition of the existing circuits. Assessment and the agreed scope determine the firm quote.

Are wiring repairs always included?

Do not assume that they are. The quote should identify known remedial work and explain how any further defects discovered during the job will be discussed and priced.
